History

In comparison to all other London boroughs, Newham has the second largest population of Muslims residing in it.

The need for MMS
MMS as a project was set-up to support the overwhelming number of Muslims who were approaching Imams (spiritual/community leaders) for help with family disputes and community problems in Newham.

The Imams felt overwhelmed and did not feel that they had the appropriate skills nor the time required to deal with such complex emotional matters of conflict resolution. Out of concern for the local community, the Imams then requested support from their local Councillors.

Conflict & Change
In response to this need the local Councillors and Canning Town Muslim Trust approached Conflict and Change, a neighbourhood mediation service in Newham with over 20 years of experience, and requested that they start up a Muslim mediation project.

Early research findings
To investigate the extent of the problem, Conflict and Change carried out research.

  • A base line study of 100 Muslims living in Newham
  • Revealed that 82% of the people felt the need for a service that would aim to peacefully resolve family and community disputes in a religiously sensitive setting
  • Majority of respondents said they would feel uncomfortable confiding in and approaching professionals who were of a different religious or cultural background to them - as such professionals would not fully understand the complexities of family or community conflicts

MMS was born in 2003
Therefore in response to the needs highlighted by local Imams and the sample opinion of people in our study, Canning Town Muslim Trust, which is an alliance of four mosques, decided to apply for funding for a Muslim Mediation Service under the supervision of Conflict and Change.

Since July 2003 an overwhelming need for our mediation service has been identified and the need for our work has continued to arise which is reflected in the vast number of cases we have received since 2003.

The Muslim Mediation Service (MMS) is now an independent organisation to Conflict and Change but affiliated to them.
